A Study on the Need Structure of Juvenile Delinquents

Abstract
It was the purpose of this study to identify the need structures of the normal and the delinquent we have administered EPPS to 208 high school boys and 242 juvenile delinquents. The need factor structure of two groups were extracted by the factor analysis based on the intercorrelations among 15 need scores. In order to compare the need dynamics we have tested the mean differences of need levels among the above groups according to the need factors, and each of 15 EPPS needs.
The main findings are as following :
A) The needs of the normal boys and the juvenile delinquents.
1. By the factor analysis technique we obtained 5 factors from the delinquent group and 6 factors from the normal boys. It was found that there were 4 common factors between two groups : named as Nurturance-Affiliation, Order-Deference, Enduring Acceptance, and Independant Goal Achievement.
2. The difference of the need factors between two group were found in Order-Deference, i.e., the delinquent group have shown negative loadings on the Order-Deference need factor.
3. In comparing the need factors of the normal boys with the need factos of the delinquents, the delinquent group have shown one more factor named as Abasement. And Normal group have shown another two more factors named as Order-Endurance, and Change.
4. The need levels of Nurturance-Affiliation factor and Independant Goal Achievement factor of the delinquent group were higher than that of normal boy group.
5. Among the EPPS needs which were based on the individual¢¥s scores, the delinquent group showed higher need levels in Achievement Succorance, and Nurturance need than the normal group. But Order, Autonomy, Intraception, and Aggression need of the normal boy group were higher than those of the delinquents.
